Judaism The religion of the Jewish people.

According to the Bible, all Jewish people are descendants of Abraham and his wife Sarah. God made an agreement, or covenant, with Abraham in Canaan, which is considered to be the beginning of Jewish history. The first Jews were descendants of Abraham, later called Israelites.

Where in the world is Israel? Located on the Mediterranean Sea, North East of Egypt, East of Saudi Arabia. Israel, also known as the Ancient land of Canaan.

Where in the world is Israel? Israel includes important locations and landmarks such as: the Capital city of Jerusalem, Mt. Sinai, Jordan River, the West Bank, and Gaza Strip. Israel is also known as the Ancient land of Canaan.

Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to freedom with God’s help. The Israelites saw Moses as a prophet, or a person who speaks for God. On Mount Sinai, God gave Moses the first five books of the Bible, called the Torah. The Torah is the basis of life and faith for the Jewish people. God also gave Moses The Ten Commandments, or the laws of the Jewish faith.

Mt. Sinai

Moses

Exodus Moses led the Israelites out of slavery from Egypt (Exodus). They traveled for 40 years, visiting places like Mt. Sinai where Moses received the Torah and Ten Commandments from God. They eventually arrived in Canaan (Israel), the land promised to the Jews by God in his Covenant to the Jewish people.

The Torah

The Ten Commandments

The Israelites were different from others living in the Fertile Crescent because they were Monotheists- they believed in only one God. The Hebrews built a strong nation they called Israel. Under the leadership of King David, Jerusalem became the capital and the site of a great temple built by Solomon. Today, Jerusalem is a center of religious and political life.

After Solomon’s death in 928 B.C. the kingdom of Israel split into two kingdoms. The North was known as Israel and was conquered by Assyria in 721 B.C. The South was called Judah and was conquered by Babylonia in 586 B.C. The Jewish Diaspora was a scattering of Jewish people from their homeland.
