DO NOW: WHAT ARE SOME DIFFERENT TYPES OF DECISIONS PEOPLE YOUR AGE HAVE TO MAKE AT HOME, AMONG FRIENDS, AND AT SCHOOL? Chapter 10 ~ “A Conquering People”

Chapter 10 – Lesson 2 God’s people settled in Canaan. After Israelites conquered Canaan, the land was distributed among the twelve (12) tribes of Israel. (descendents of the twelve sons of Jacob ~ aka ~ Israel). Land was distributed to each tribe by casting lots. As soon as the land was distributed, the tribes met at Shechem, a religious shrine, to thank God for his great blessings. The Book of Judges reminds God’s people to keep their pact of the covenant.

Chapter 10 – Lesson 2 In the Book of Joshua, certain patterns begin to happen:  The Israelites turned away from the one true God and worshipped false gods.  God allowed other nations to rule over the Israelites.  The Israelites cried out to God for help.  God remembered his covenant with them, and so he sends a judge to save them. A judge in these times was a military leader who helped defeat the enemy.  Deborah was the first judge sent by God to remind the Israelites to keep the covenant.

Chapter 10 – Lesson 2 The Israelites began to worship false gods. As a result, Israelite territory was taken over by the Canaanite king. Deborah called on Barak, an Israelite commander to gather his troops at Mt. Tabor. She told him God would give the Israelites a great victory there. Deborah went with Barak to Mt. Tabor. God sent a thunderstorm that made the enemy’s chariots get stuck in the mud. Barak’s army conquered the Canaanites. Through God’s actions and Deborah’s faith, the land was free of enemies.

Chapter 10 ~ Lesson 2 Question: Why was a Canaanite king able to take over Israelite territory?
