Writing Algebraic Expressions Part 2 SWBAT WRITE ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS USING GROUPING SYMBOLS AND THE PHRASE LESS THAN. SWBAT WRITE WRITTEN EXPRESSIONS FROM ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS.

Do Now:  Which shows 121 written in exponential form? A B C D  Which expression represents two more than five times a number z? A. 7zB. 5z + 2C. 2(5z)  Frank weighs 80 pounds. About how many kilograms does Frank weigh? (1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds)

Algebraic  Written  Algebraic Expression  (x +2) · 5  How can we write this as a written expressions?  Let’s break it down into 2 parts.  How could you write (x + 2) as a written expressions?  The sum of a number and two.  Make sure and say “a number” instead of “the sum of n and two” The word sum prompts you to add first. (It is telling us we need the answer. Next we combine the two parts: The sum of a number and two, times five.

Practice  Write a written expression for (x + 4) ÷ 10  The sum of a number and four, divided by ten  Write an algebraic expression for four times the difference of a number and 6  4 · (x – 6) or 4(x – 6)

Carrie has 30 fewer dollars than her friend. Here is a written expression showing the amount of money Carrie has. 30 less than x Which of the following represents this? a. X – 30 b x

Your Turn! You have 15 minutes to work with a neighbor to complete the worksheet.

Exit Ticket 1. Write an algebraic expression for three times the sum of a number and eight. 2. Write a written expression for the algebraic expression using less than: 9 – n 3. Write an algebraic expression for ten less than the sum of six and a number.
