The Data Futures Partnership Leading the development of New Zealand’s data use system

Findings of the Forum Potential for much greater data-sharing The data-use system is hard to navigate Potential for more data re- use and innovation to create value Tenuous trust

Out of the Forum – a Partnership The Data Futures Forum produced a set of recommended principles which were endorsed by Cabinet: Value – New Zealand should use data to create social and economic value Inclusion – All New Zealanders should be able to benefit Trust – The way data is managed should build trust in institutions Control – Individuals should have greater control over data about them In February 2015 Cabinet endorsed these principles, and in August 2015 decided to establish the Data Futures Partnership as a cross-sector group of influential people to work together to drive high-trust and high-value data use, to the benefit of all New Zealanders.

What is the Partnership? The Data Futures Partnership is a publically funded, independent group that is helping lead the development of New Zealand’s data-use system. Increased and innovative use of data has the potential to create massive social, environmental and economic value for New Zealand, but creating that value requires innovative and collaborative approaches to data use. Cabinet has tasked the Partnership with facilitating a collective effort to create a data use system that unlocks that value.
