Presentation transcript:

What hobbies do you have outside of school? Tell me 5 things about it that I may not know! For example: Outside of school, I go bouldering. Bouldering is like rock climbing but without ropes (1). You climb up to about 25 feet (2). To get to the top of the wall, you can only use one colour hold (3). There are three bouldering centres in London (4), and you can also boulder outside (5).

Writing to Inform

Learning Objectives To understand what writing to inform is. (5) To sequence your information clearly, using connectives. (5) To use a wide range of connectives in your work. (6)

Remember, in your SATs, you are being marked on: Spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Paragraphs Correct format? Correct audience? Correct purpose? Have you used the right language features?

Writing to Inform - Features Must tell the reader something. Address the reader as ‘you’. e.g You need to… You must… Link paragraphs in a logical order. Links = connectives What do I mean by link?

Make a list of every connective you can think of Remember: a connective links one thing to another. Connectives - -

Connectives And But Because However Therefore Furthermore Firstly Secondly For Or So Although On the other hand Whereas Also Do you know what these words mean? If not, put a ‘*’ and look them up! But – except for the fact Because - Gives a reason

Example! “Write a speech informing students about what New York is like”. Hello! I am here to tell you about the city of New York. Although it rains a lot, New York is a very beautiful city. It has one of the best city parks in the world, called Central Park. Furthermore, New York is the most highly populated city in America, meaning it is full of exciting and interesting things to do (as well as full of queues!) There are over a thousand interesting places to visit in New York, from the Statue of Liberty, to Trump Tower. On the downside, however, New York is very expensive: it is the most expensive city in North America. A single loaf of bread can cost $8! Despite being so expensive, New York has a population of over eight million people, and is getting bigger every year.

What have you learned so far? Your task is to make a leaflet informing over 65s how to buy and use one of the following: A smart phone of your choice A kindle

Remember PAF: Format Audience Write an article for a teen magazine informing people how to eat healthily. Format Audience Purpose

Now try this one You need to write a speech that you will give to year 7 pupils, informing them about what to expect in year 8. Purpose Audience Format

Try writing these out, and labelling them yourself with Format, Audience and Purpose Design a poster to put up in a doctor’s surgery informing patients about flu injections. Write a poem to entertain your teachers. Write a menu, describing all the lovely meals for customers to read in ‘Harvester’ restaurant. Create a script for a children’s film which is designed to entertain them.

Extension Write a letter informing me about your journey to school. Remember: Write your (fake) address and the date in the top right corner. To write in paragraphs that are sequenced logically (inform me of things in the order you would do them). Address the reader as ‘you’ Use a range of connectives You know the reader (me) so sign off as ‘yours sincerely’
