Speed, Velocity, Displacement, Distance By Tammy Hsu and Viona Chung

Speed Speed is the distance covered in a unit of time How fast something moves It is a scalar quantity; it does not show direction, but shows magnitude of what distance taken at a given time To calculate speed, you divide distance over time.

Velocity Velocity is the rate of change of displacement with time It is a vector quantity, having both magnitude and direction. To calculate velocity, you divide displacement over time.

Displacement Displacement is a vector measure of the interval between two locations measured along the shortest path connecting them. It is both the distance and direction an object moves. Displacement is a vector quantity because it has direction and magnitude. Displacement is a vector quantity because it has direction and magnitude.

Distance Distance is how far an object moves; total length of a path. Distance is a scalar quantity because it does not have direction, but only magnitude.

Slope of Graph x(t) =Velocity The slope of a graph is the velocity of the object, since velocity is defined as the change in position divided by the change in time. slope = rise / run slope = 30 m / 10 s slope = 3 m/s
