Introduction to Slope

The slope of a line is the “steepness” or “tilt” of that line. What is slope?

Types of Slope Up and to the right Positive Down and to the right Negative

Is the slope positive or negative? Positive

Is the slope positive or negative? Negative

Is the slope positive or negative? Positive

 Calculating Slope

Count the Slope! 

rise = 4 run = 5 Slope = rise run Slope = 4/5

Count the Slope! 

No rise at all means your numerator will be zero. Slope = 0 Think of hiking along a flat ground. It requires zero effort! Slope of Horizontal Lines

No run at all means your denominator will be zero. Try this in your calculator. 50 ÷ 0. What do you get? Slope = undefined Think of hiking down a perfectly vertical cliff. It is impossible!  You would die. Slope of Vertical Lines

Count the Slope! 
