Welcome! Presidential Candidate Discussion 1 20 November 2015

Ground Rules Work towards consensus; Discuss candidates one at a time; To have the floor, please raise hand. However individual contributions will be timed at one minute; Please do not interrupt; Possible show of hands at 3:55pm.

Presidential Qualities or ‘Wish List’ 1. Recognizes the importance of MCLA and of the Liberal Arts education understands the liberal arts and their educational value articulates meaning and value of liberal arts to diverse audiences and stakeholders (politicians, fundraisers, potential students and their families, etc.) articulates meaning and value of MCLA to those audiences

Presidential Qualities or ‘Wish List’ 2. Supports academic programs maintains and strengthens existing academic programs is willing to expand and develop programs that fit our mission actively seeks and provides necessary resources to those programs

Presidential Qualities or ‘Wish List’ 3. Supports faculty is committed to hiring new full-time tenure-track faculty supports adjunct faculty, and understands their unique situation supports faculty in all endeavors (teaching, advising, scholarship and research, travel, intellectual exchange) diversifies hires within different departments (Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, etc.)

Presidential Qualities or ‘Wish List’ 4. Realizes the role of MCLA in the community fosters strong relationship with the local and regional community through mutually beneficial endeavors (creative economy, civic engagement, public events, etc.) facilitates and encourages community values within MCLA’s working relationships

Presidential Qualities or ‘Wish List’ 5. Takes on leadership responsibly is committed to MCLA as academic institution while fostering a stronger fit among the units of the institution (academics with student life, etc.) listens well, respects shared governance, and can delegate responsibilities provides the necessary academic, personal, and financial supports to enable a diverse student body to succeed works well within a political and economic environment with diminishing resources and greater "accountability" maintains the integrity of the college and its mission promotes and fosters equity, while addressing social justice issues.
