Advisement for Transfer and First-Year Students For corrections to students’ audit sheets:

Two General Education Programs There are two current gen ed programs, both called Intellectual Foundations (IF): 1.“Old” IF for students enrolling from Fall 2006 through Spring 2014 Provost waiver reduced requirements for these students starting in Fall Waiver is applied automatically in degree audit system 2.IF14 for students entering Summer 2014 onward

Quick IF Comparison “Old” IF After the Provost waiver is applied, requirements are generally the same as IF14 requirements covered in this presentation EXCEPT students still need: 1.Two writing-intensive courses (W) 2.One Oral Communication course IF14 Requirements are covered in this presentation

Intellectual Foundations 2014: IF14 General Education requirements for ALL incoming students that started Fall 2014 but first some transfer-specific information….

How Many Credits Can Transfer? Maximum of 88 total transfer credits From 2 and/or 4 year institutions OR From 4 year institution Maximum of 66 credits from two-year institutions Maximum 15 credits each from proprietary schools, non-collegiate institutions Such as ITT Tech, etc.

Transcripts for ALL Transfer Students Associates degree must be verified by Admissions office – Has their most recent college transcript (showing degree) been sent to Admissions? – Are ALL of their transfer courses showing in Degree Works? – If not, they contact Admissions in Moot 110 Remind them: Be sure to send to Admissions the High School transcript – This is to verify foreign language completion, etc. – If verified, Global Engagement gen ed requirement will be waived

What is a G.E.T.A.? G.E.T.A. = General Education Transcript Addendum – Applies only to transfer students—sent by another SUNY institution indicating which SUNY Trustees’ requirements are finished If Admissions has received the G.E.T.A., some IF14 requirements will be noted as fulfilled on the audit sheet Understanding the G.E.T.A. can help students avoid taking unneeded coursework For questions or concerns, contact the Admissions office or e- mail

Completed AA or AS Degree? Transfer students with AA, AS,* BA, BS degrees are expected to 1.satisfy the knowledge, competencies, and skills areas in the SUNY GER defined by the 2010 Policy of the SUNY Board of Trustees. Requirements are: – satisfaction of two competencies and satisfaction of 7 of 10 of the knowledge and skills areas including the two required areas (basic writing & math). – Earn 30 credits of courses approved for SUNY GER. 2.satisfy the SUNY Buffalo State diversity requirement via course completion or transfer course equivalency. *But not AAS

Our Focus Helping students understand college and graduation requirements so they don’t take unnecessary coursework How to read the Degree Works (DW) audit sheet The Registrar’s “faculty” page has more info on logging in and finding a student

Log in to DW From the Registrar’s web site: From MYBUFFSTATE TOOLBOX:

IF14 Requirements /intellectual-foundations-2014 Web page summarizes requirements Degree Works (DW) degree audit system helps you and your advisees keep track of the courses required to graduate

Degree Works summarizes Three primary categories of courses: – IF14 courses – Major and minor courses Some majors and minors have elective courses within them – All-college electives = everything else

Summaries at the Top of Degree Works Audit Sheet General Requirements Minimum 120 credits to graduate Minimum 32 credits taken at Buffalo State Upper-Division 33 credits (upcoming slide) Must maintain minimum 2.0 GPA overall and in the major  Some majors have higher minimums

Sample Audit Sheet Samantha Student

Things to know about DW audit sheet It’s in real time, integrated with Banner Class History now includes CRNs What If? is a useful function “Save as PDF” allows printing a prettier version Indicates whether the student applied for graduation Historic report (on the left) shows a “frozen” audit for graduated students Midterm grades can be seen, if entered in Banner, indicated with (M). Very useful for advisement.

Upper-Division: 33 Credits Upper division courses are generally 300 or 400 level – Foreign Language 201 and 202 count as UD if taken at BSC, although not required for degree All students must complete a minimum of 33 credits of upper division courses If a course from a two-year school transfers in as 300/400 level, it is considered upper division Most students, but NOT all, get enough UD credits in major

IF14: Basic Written and Oral Communication  CWP 101 (3 credits) – must earn a minimum grade of C  CWP 102 (3 credits) – must earn a minimum grade of C Check DW audit sheet to see if student has: – Credit from transfer school – An exemption (AP course, etc.) HS transcript sent to Admissions for this purpose If student gets a grade less than C, must retake the course – Questions? Contact College Writing Program, TWIN 100

IF14: Math and Quantitative Reasoning One of the following courses:  ECO 305 Statistics for Economics  MAT 103 Introduction to Contemporary Mathematics  MAT 114 Functions and Modeling  MAT 122 Elementary Math from an Advanced S tandpoint  MAT 126 Calculus  MAT 161 Calculus I  MAT 311 Introduction to Probability and Statistics  PHI 107 Introduction to Mathematical Logic Requirement may be met through: Credit-bearing (AP) coursework—evaluated by Admissions from student- submitted HS information Equivalent transfer course or GETA

IF14: Cognate Foundations Need 3 credits in each of four categories:  Arts  Humanities  Natural Science  Social Science ONLY designated courses count See IF14 quad-fold pamphlet, online list, & audit sheet Must be outside the major prefix* E.g., PSY major cannot use PSY 101 for Social Science * See G.E.T.A. will satisfy requirement, regardless of rule

Banner Advanced Search by IF14 Category “Attribute Type” box

IF14: Foundations of Civilizations  American History  3 credits  Western Civilization  3 credits  Non-Western Civilization  3 credits These courses can satisfy major or minor requirements

IF14: Diversity One course from the designated list (3 credits) “Double dip” means that a course satisfies two or more requirements – Example: SOC 240 counts both as Diversity and Social Science Cognate Foundations – But it’s still only 3 credits Diversity courses can be double-dipped with ANY other requirement (major, minor, IF14, etc.)

IF14: Global Engagement Select one of four options* Can satisfy major/minor requirements 1.Study one foreign language – Requirement of proficiency at the 102 level, that can be satisfied with high school proficiency (One year in HS = one semester here) – MUST send HS transcript to Admissions for this purpose 2.Take a proficiency test 3.Cultural immersion through study abroad 4.Global engagement through specific service- learning experiences *See the IF14 web site for full details

Infusion Categories In IF14, three important Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are infused into courses within the major:  Writing  Critical Thinking  Information Management Each program identified courses to satisfy each SLO, and assessment will be conducted in the identified courses. Infusion started in Summer 2015 Lists of infused courses here: categories categories

Financial Aid basics Students must be accepted into a major no later than 60 credits Financial aid is threatened (& may be lost) when – a student is not full-time (12 credits or more) – classes are not completed (E, F, W, I, U) – GPA is below 2.0 Financial aid rules are different for state (TAP) and federal aid Other than these basic rules, send student to Financial Aid office for consultation. Rules are complex and individual. More information:

Tips for Advisee Success Students can use Schedule Planner in Banner SSB – – ration/collegescheduler.pdf ration/collegescheduler.pdf If students click on a “hot” course link in audit sheet, a Sneak Preview window opens, showing current course availability in Banner (sections, CRNs, seats open, meeting times). Very helpful! If a student fails a class twice, he or she must petition to get a 3 rd repeat to count.

Tips about DW audit sheet Can get student’s address by using the “hot” student name: a.Hovering mouse over the name shows address at bottom left of screen b.Clicking name brings up a blank Graduation Checklist A new “Registration Checklist” option in the Format box shows only what the student still needs to take

Links for referring students Registrar’s “For Students” DW page: Video about how to read the audit sheet: Ten-page “Degree Works for Students” manual: uffalostate.edu/files/uploads/Documents/degre eworks/DWFORSTUDENTS.pdf uffalostate.edu/files/uploads/Documents/degre eworks/DWFORSTUDENTS.pdf

Granting Overrides When a section has restrictions, student will get an saying what the first impediment to registration is Student should forward that to faculty when asking for an override Once override is granted, student must still go into Banner and register (using CRN) Faculty may not realize that if there’s more than one restriction, they “come up” one at a time – Your department can tell you what restriction(s) are applied to your sections

More tips Faculty/staff video on doing overrides : Students should forward s to their phones so when they get an message, they can show the instructor what the error was. CTS help page illustrates sending to their phones: Students should be encouraged to use the waitlist feature, it moves quicker than you think. The waitlist continues to function during all of Drop-Add week, although students cannot add themselves to a new waitlist after Tuesday of Drop-Add.

Questions? Note: This PowerPoint presentation is available on the SOP web site, in the “For Faculty” section.
