5 th period DO NOW Gain E by eating and drinking and lose it by standing still??? (but you still have PE because you’re standing up) Objects can have 100% or 0% PE when it’s not moving??? Moving objects are transferring PE into KE. KE is you’re burning off all the PE that you built up. SO you’re transferring your PE to your KE. You charge up your PE when you eat and use KE all through the day Move a mm: you keep the KE for that period of time. KE is movement and PE is basically stored up energy that can be released. PE is something that has the potential to move and release its energy. When you have KE and you’re moving up the mountain, PE is really high because that’s all the energy stored up. And then you transfer it to KE when you go down really fast bc the PE was really great. The higher you get the more PE you get bc gravity adds more E. (positioning above ground level) SO the higher you are the more PE you can have? YES. Comparing height with the ground

4 th period PE PE is stored energy bc the fan car had PE and it was stored in the battery (agrees) The higher you are the more gravitational PE you have. Above surface level, it has PE. Types of energy: Chemical, electrical, gravitational, nuclear How do you know something has KE? Something is moving or using some sort of energy or just doing something in general (agrees (agrees) (Can KE turn into PE??) Do we have KE? PE transfers (changes) to KE. We do have KE bc we have PE that we use to be able to do everyday things. In some way or another everyone has KE because KE is basically movement, so if you move you have KE. You can lose KE if you’re not moving. Something must first have PE in order to have KE later. KE = 0.5mv^2

3 rd period KE can be transferred to another object KE happens when you’re moving PE is how high up something is (can be – gravitational PE) KE PE usually can be developed when not moving because when you wind something up (MT cars) PE is energy of an object moving Reversed – KE is an object moving PE is sealed up energy – like roller coaster – if its slowly moving it has PE Can KE and PE be used at the same time if there’s constant speed??? (What about what we said before?) They will still have KE because cells in their body are moving inside of them??? How can KE and PE be used? Whenever there’s movement there’s KE. Whenever there’s not movement, there’s PE??? PE is basically KE but in a suspended (paused, waiting) state??? KE has a greater mass or speed???

2 nd period PE is E based on how high up you are on a certain slope (gravitational PE) How do you get and lose PE and KE? You have to have an added force (transfer of E) to get PE/KE PE from eating? (humans) PE is a stationary object that’s not in motion KE is an object in motion You get more KE with more PE The greater the speed of an object the greater the KE PE allows objects to fall (gravity) E is associated with certain objects PE turns into KE KE can be passed onto other objects
