Breast feeding and working mothers

We need to work as early as possible !!!!

We need to Join work after 3-4 months !!!!

Trends in 3 indicators of breast feeding

Relative risk associated with child feeding practices compared with Partial breastfeeding (LSMCU 2008) EBFEBF

Breastfeeding rates can be increased - The evidence! Breastfeeding Counseling !

Infant and young child feeding practices before and after intervention in Lalitpur District (600 villages)

Guidelines for successful breastfeeding for working mothers Before returning to work: Enjoy special time with baby Feed on demand Teach breast milk expression A few days before returning to work, give EBM with a cup or a spoon.

On Joining Work Breastfeed - early morning, night time, just before leaving and coming back from work Workplace near home or creche available - breastfeeding breaks Express breast milk during work in a clean container for storage or discard

Hand Expressing Breast milk

Pumps used to Express Breast milk

Storage Time at Room Temperature Temperature in F (in C)Hours 60 º (15.5º)24 66º to 72º (18.8º to 22.2º)10 79º (26.1º)4 to 6 86 ºto 100º (30º to 37.7º)4

Storage Time at Refrigerator CompartmentHours Freezer contained within a refrigeratorUp to 2 weeks Bottom, top mount, side-by-side or stand alone freezer 3 to 4 months Deep Freeze with a constant 0º F (-19ºC) 6 to 12 months 32 º F to 39 º F (0º to 3.8º C) - Up to 8 days

Thawing and using stored breast milk Always check date on milk's container Do not use undated / long stored milk Heat milk under warm, running water Gently swirl the container to mix the milk. If warm water is not available, heat a pan of water on the stove With water warm (not boiling), remove the pan and place the milk container in the pan

Thawing and using stored breast milk Never microwave or warm milk container directly on the stove Test the temperature of the milk on the inside of your wrist After thawing, milk should be stored in the refrigerator for no more than 24 hours Never refreeze thawed milk Throw away previously frozen milk that is not used within 24 hours

Lactation rooms

Transporting breast milk If transporting milk, pack it in a cooler filled with ice. Do not leave milk in a cooler for more than 24 hours.

DISADVANTAGES OF BOTTLE/ ANIMAL FEEDING Exposes to infections No living anti-infective factors Digestive problems and malnutrition Suckling and development problems Increases the infant's risk of developing chronic conditions Does not nurture bonding No protection from another pregnancy Does not lower the risk of breast and ovarian cancers Expensive and less nutritious

Advantages to Employers Reduces Absenteeism Breastfed babies had statistically fewer episodes of illness than formula-fed infants Mothers of breastfed babies had fewer absences 25% of all one-day maternal absences were by mothers breastfeeding compared to 75% for the formula-fed groups (1995, USA)

Benefits to the Society Reduces morbidity and mortality More economical Average cost of feeding a 6-month-old infant for one month on infant formula is estimated to be about Rs per month.

Newborn deserves best Nutrition, Improved Survival, Optimum Development & Healthy Life Breastfeeding can do this miracle !!!
