Hazards in the workplace. By Talia MacAskill.

Safety hazard Cords can be tripped on, possibly causing them to come out of the wall. Make sure all cords are either taped down or surrounded by something to prevent this.

Lighting hazard. Insufficient lighting can cause eye strain. Blinds should be partially opened to enable natural lighting as well as interior lighting.

Ergonomic hazard. Sitting incorrectly at your desk for long periods of time can cause back strain and OOS syndrome. Desk must be clear and adjustable seating must be provided. Foot rests are optional, but preferred.

Safety hazard. Cords are exposed and can easily be unintentionally pulled from the wall by the mouse cord, possibly resulting in electrocution. To reduce the hazard, cords should be tied neatly, taped down, or out of the way.

Radiation hazard. Computers emit low level radiation, so must be turned away so no one can sit behind them.

Radiation hazard. Photocopiers must be kept in a well ventilated room as they emit low level radiation, and also toner dust.

Safety hazard. Bins should be placed in a corner or out of areas where they can be tripped on.

Hygienic hazard. Leaving food scraps or coffee mugs around the office is unhygienic. Coffee mugs should be kept out of the office and in the kitchen. They can attract insects.

Safety hazard. Chairs are stacked too high and could easily topple down, potentially injuring someone. Unused chairs should be kept in a storeroom.

Electrical hazard. Power points switched on before plugging a cord in can cause electrical shocks. Always plug the cord in and then switch the power on. Always keep power points switched off when not in use.
