Science Jan 12th Jan 13th
1st block only… Ed Helper Activity Read and highlight answers within text the multiple choice questions….. This will be completed for homework if not completed before class starts Use your time wisely….
Warm Up Jan 12th Jan 13th, 2015 Without using your notes, draw the 4 layers that make up the center of the Earth!
4 Layers of the Earth
Homework collection Make sure your name is on your homework Pass it in using our classroom procedure now
Next assessment… You will have a 10 question multiple choice test on Wednesday, Jan 14th and Thursday, Jan 15th Study, Study, Study!!!!! We will finish all notes today on this unit so make sure you take your notebooks home and study!!!!
Earth’s Layers Foldable Take our your foldable from last class You will be rotating around the classroom to gather information to complete the inside of your foldable We will count off from 1 – 5 You will start in the station that matches your number Does anyone have any questions? You will have 10 minutes to rotate through all stations Anyone not using their time wisely WILL NOT MAKE A MODEL TODAY USING PLAYDOUGH!
4 corners ….on a blank page! Draw this diagram in your notebook now….
Label each corner Inner Core-Red Outer Core-Orange Mantle -Yellow Crust-Blue Next lightly color each corner (you need to see the facts you are about to write)
Now it’s time to get our hands dirty… You will be making your model now… Please follow along as we work together to create your model Remember these colors Inner core = red Outer core = orange Mantle = yellow Crust = blue
Completing your 4 corners too While you are making your model, you will also be completing your 4 corners in your notebook You will be lightly shading in each corner and then writing information about each corner Please let me know if do not know what to do or get confused Everyone must pay attention !!!!
Write in notebook: Solid iron and nickel layer Densest layer The Earth’s Inner Core: (red corner) Solid iron and nickel layer Densest layer The inner core + the Earth’s rotation, creates the Earth’s magnetic field Now make this layer!
Write in notebook: The Earth’s Outer Core: (orange corner) Liquid layer made of nickel and iron Spins around the inner core Earth’s only liquid layer now add this layer
Write in notebook: The Earth’s Mantle: (yellow corner) below the crust Made of silicon, magnesium, iron, oxygen Has CONVECTION CURRENTS now add this layer
Write in notebook: The Earth’s Crust: (blue corner) Thin, solid outer layer Least dense layer 2 types: continental crust oceanic crusts now add this layer
Write in notebook: Oceanic Crusts: under the oceans More dense (because the ocean compresses it) Thinner
Write in notebook: Continental Crust: under the continents Less dense Thicker
Write in notebook: The Earth is mostly composed of rock
Write in notebook: 75% (3/4) of the Earth’s surface is covered by water (liquid water and frozen water)
Write in notebook: Composition of the Earth: 4 Distinct Layers: Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core
Density Challenge question: Remember the density column? Which substance went to the bottom? Which went to the top? Knowing what we now know about density, take a look at the 4 layers of the earth in the next slide and tell me which would be most dense, and which would be least dense.
4 Layers of the Earth –which layer is most dense?
4 Layers of the Earth –which layer is least dense?
Increased density as we go to the center of earth The 4 layers have different densities which causes them to separate Least dense = crust Most dense = inner core

Pay close attention to the rap video Dojo points for the best rap performance! I will play the song once and then volunteers will perform parts of the song for points!
