Four Immigration Era 1847 Covered wagons pulled by oxen Handcarts pulled by people Down and back wagon trains 1869 Steam locomotives

Handcarts Most made it to Utah safely Only one that had serious problems was the Martin and Willie companies. –Left late –280 of 980 people died of starvation

Down and Back Wagons “Utah Boys” went to Iowa to pick up immigrants Was exciting escape for the young men Often became suitors to the immigrating women.

Features of Utah Settlements Streets in grid pattern Wide streets with irrigation ditches Large city blocks, 4 acres+ In center of town was for public things, such as churches and parks Farmers on the outskirts
