APGAP Practice FRQ

Practice Question 1 1.) The Constitution was an attempt to address problems of decentralization that were experienced under the Articles of Confederation. (a) List three problems of decentralized power that existed under the Articles of Confederation. For each problem you listed, identify one solution that the Constitution provided to address the problem. (b) Some have argued that the tensions between decentralized and centralized power continue to exist. Support this argument by explaining how one of the following illustrates the continuing tension. Environmental policy Gun control Disability access

Dissecting the FRQ Part I: An initial statement. 1.) The Constitution was an attempt to address problems of decentralization that were experienced under the Articles of Confederation. Is this asking you to do anything? Take note of the important themes/concepts it’s addressing.

Dissecting the FRQ Part II: What do I do?!?! Break it down (no dancing). List three problems of decentralized power that existed under the Articles of Confederation. For each problem you listed, identify one solution that the Constitution provided to address the problem. Take note of the verbs here: what are you being asked to do? List/identify = enumerate without explanation.

Dissecting the FRQ Part II continued: Keep breaking it down. (b) Some have argued that the tensions between decentralized and centralized power continue to exist. Support this argument by explaining how one of the following illustrates the continuing tension. Environmental policy Gun control Disability access Again, take note of the verbs: what is the difference between “explaining” and “listing/identifying?” Explaining involves causal relationships or patterns between two concepts/events/phenomena/etc.

Dissecting the FRQ Part III: How is it scored? This one is worth a total of 5 points. How do you earn those points? Part (a) = maximum of 3 points; 1 point for each problem/solution pair identified. NO PARTIAL CREDIT FOR ANYTHING LESS! Part (b) = maximum of 2 points; 1 point awarded for a generalization; 2 points awarded for a specific explanation of how/why/etc. that link exists.
