Kansas State Department of Education Board Outcomes for ‘Kansans Can’ Vision 1.HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION (four-year cohort)  “Graduation” vs. “College and career ready”?  Definition of term?  Federal definition vs. state definition?  More than one definition needed to account for special needs students? POST-SECONDARY ATTENDANCE/COMPLETION (“Completer” possesses industry-recognized credential or 12 college credits by end of first semester after cohort’s high school graduation)  No universal definition at this point; open for Kansas (SBoE) to define  Responsibility for success passes to post-secondary after that first post-secondary semester?  Include IB, AVID, Regents, Project Lead the Way etc. as “Completers” credentials?  Credentials must be ones with high predictive power.  Account for military (enter boot camp = completer)? Kansas State Department of Education Adapting Definition of Kansas College and Career Ready NEW DEFINITION PROPOSED: “ A successful Kansas graduate has the academic preparation, cognitive preparation, technical skills, civic skills, and employability skills to be successful in postsecondary education, in the attainment of an industry recognized certification or in the workforce, without the need for remediation. ”  “Civic” or “citizenship”  Include “college and career ready” in definition? Kansas State Department of Education KSDE’s New Vision  Kindergarten Readiness  Increasing Graduation Rates  Increasing the percent of students completing a credential or pursuing post-secondary education  Decreasing the percent of students who need remedial coursework upon attending post-secondary schools  Each student will have an individual plan of study  Social/Emotional factors relative to student success measured locally

Kansas State Department of Education Keys to the Kingdom: Individual Plan Of Study The Individual Plan of study naturally addresses multiple outcomes in the new vision by:  Keeping students on time and on track for graduation  Creating a pathway including post-secondary opportunities  Creating the opportunity to identify when students are struggling academically  Bringing relevance and purpose to course enrollment

Kansas State Department of Education An Individual Plan of Study is not a Checklist!  An Individual Plan of Study is a living document that facilitates a conversation with a student regarding his or her future. At the very least, it includes: 1.Career interests identified by the student through an authentic career interest survey or assessment. 2.A roadmap based on the student’s interests and talents and graduation requirements 3.Includes approved coursework for the student's educational and career goals 4.Includes developmentally-appropriate, work-based learning experiences.  The individual Plan of Study is most powerful when accompanied by meaningful conversation and activities that help the student identify and set goals.

Kansas State Department of Education Importance of the individual plan of study  KSDE anticipates that at the Board of Education meeting in January, 2016, the Board will include the Individual Plan of Study for every 8-12 grade student as a state success outcome.  KSDE convened a focus group of counselors and administrators to identify the essential components of an effective Individual Plan of Study.  These components along with best practices for implementing an individual plan of study will be made available to schools.

Kansas State Department of Education Essential Components of an Effective Individual Plan of Study 1.Software platform of the Individual Plan of Study must integrate with PowerSchool, Skyward, Infinite Campus and Insight Student Information Systems (preferably with all systems being used in Kansas schools). 2.College and Career Readiness Curriculum for teachers including recommendations regarding when to implement interest inventories, etc. 3.Exportable portfolio with room for: career and secondary training goals, resume, cover letters, recommendation letters, essays and artifacts all in one place. 4.Map to the student’s major of interest and courses required at the college level (aid transition to the college of interest). 5.System should have a seamless transition from Middle School to High School and High School to College. 6.Career Profiler including a personality tool (i.e. “do what you are”) and interest inventories with results aligned to related careers and saved for future reference.

Kansas State Department of Education Essential Components of an Effective Individual Plan of Study 7.Secure access for administrators, teachers, counselors, parents and students. 8.General information regarding careers including daily activities, required training and potential job market. 9.Tracking: Progress toward a career cluster Progress toward graduation College applications Scholarship applications Transcripts sent Financial Aid Progress Fee waivers requested and status of waiver Career Readiness Activities completed at each grade level 10.Ability to send transcripts to post-secondary schools. 11.Business Connections Component: Link students to internships, job shadows, etc. in his or her area of interest.
