Connecting the C^3 Community, Computers, and the Classroom by Kathryn Wolfington and Lisa Reed Kathryn: Lisa:

Testimonies of the students…. “My favorite part of the day was when everyone was on the playground and one of the kids, Rayvahn, didn't have a friend to play with so I approached him and he was so cute and asked if I wanted to play soccer with him. It was really cute the way he asked me to play with him because he seemed like an embarressed kid asking his crush on a date, it was adorable. We played soccer for about twenty minutes, and he scored 50 goals, I swear.” ~Morgan, Volunteers of America, Rainbow House

Please use the three dots you received to answer the three questions posted on the walls around the classroom.

What might you learn/take away from our session today? A fabulous technology-rich, interdisciplinary, community service unit and everything involved to use tomorrow! New FREE web applications New ways to use web applications you may already know about Other…

Why did we create this unit? Technology standards for students Raise awareness among adolescents about community service Improve cooperative learning and teamwork skills

C^3 is like a puzzle… There are many pieces of this unit you will learn about as we proceed through this session. Please use the post-it notes to jot down your questions as we go.

Where are we headed in the next 2 hours? Pre- Community Service Day Building Background Cooperative Learning Groups Research non-profits Securing a location Wordle (try it yourself!) Lunch Directions (try it yourself!) Parent Chaperones Post Community Service Day Google Survey (try it yourself!) Student examples Expert teachers Student Choice Presentations Rubrics Try all 4 applications! Thoughts for the future… Questions?

Pre Community Service Day Building Background Community Service Curriculum Lessons

Pre Community Service Day Logistics Cooperative Learning Groups Supervising Teachers Research Non-profits in Denver Metro Area (list of at least 5) Phone Scripts Teachers approve list and scripts Students begin making phone calls

Pre Community Service Day WORDLE Each group creates a WORDLE that represents the non-profit where they will be volunteering.

Your Turn Go to Work with one other person to create a Wordle about community service. Practice embedding your Wordle by putting it on our wikispace. Follow the instructions at the top of the page.

Pre Community Service Day Check out the student packet posted to our wiki. A way for students to stay organize throughout the planning process LUNCH (authentic and ethnic)

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY!! Check in Leave by 8:30 and return no earlier than 2:15 Teachers visit students at their sites (Google Maps to plan route) The Vibe at 2:15 Students take Google Survey upon return before leaving for the day See the survey on our wiki

Survey Results As a result of your experience, would you consider doing community service on your own? 138 students of 220 took the survey About 82 did not take the survey ( taking it the day we go will help eliminate this problem)

Get up and move around! At this point you have learned about the planning for Community Service Day as well as about the technology involved in this preparation. Please use a post-it note to complete one of the following sentence starters regarding the first part of our presentation. –Something I am still wondering about is….. –Something I will definitely use is…. –The biggest obstacle I might face implementing this unit is…..

Post Community Service Day Presentation Possibilities –Supervising groups –Similar project groups –Evening Showcase How do we assess? –Create rubrics using Rubistar with other Expert teacher

Questions… We would like to address some questions we came across in the sentence starter activity Missing puzzle pieces Any further questions?
