Task 2: Changing sentences Your task is to re-write each of the sentences by swapping the words underlined for another word similar in meaning.

Example He walked down the street.

Question 1 Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress, was something else altogether. She was a gigantic, fierce monster who frightened the life out of the pupils and teachers alike. In your own words describe the character of Mrs Trunchbull. Highlighted for you are words that you may wish to change.

Question 2 The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him was defined: small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose. Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws. In your own words describe the appearance of the second man. Highlighted for you are words that you may wish to change.

Question 3 I hated having mum’s new boyfriend about. I hated the whole house whenever he was in it. I never once spoke to him willingly, never began a conversation with him and only answered when he spoke to me when mum was in the room to hear. In your own words describe how this person feels about her mother’s new boyfriend and explain how she shows him that she doesn’t like him.

Question 4 That face of hers was the most frightening thing I have ever seen. Just looking at it gave me the shakes all over. It was so crumpled it looked like it had been pickled in vinegar. It was a fearsome sight. In your own words describe the appearance of the witch and the young boy’s reaction to her.

Your next task is to read the article entitled ‘The eight-year-old running 186 miles a week.’ Explain the meaning of the following sentences in your own words: ‘pounding the deserted pavements’ ‘be crippled before she reaches adulthood’ ‘has been taking part in a gruelling 3,588km run.’ ‘she’s becoming the victim of Olympic fever.’ ‘it’s not the first time a child athlete has caused controversy.’
