General Election 2010 What the Parties Say – Afghanistan and Defence

The Conservative Party – Afghanistan and Defence Support the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Buy new and better nuclear weapons for Britain. Give soldiers who are sent to Afghanistan more money. Begin to look after soldiers who return home from war more to make sure that they are not mentally affected. Do regular reviews to make sure that Britain is properly defended. Do an immediate review of how much money is needed by the army before the Autumn of 2010.

The Labour Party – Afghanistan and Defence Carry on sending soldiers to Afghanistan and Iraq. Have stopped British soldiers fighting in Iraq. Buy new and better nuclear weapons for Britain. Work more with other countries to defend each other, especially France. Give free further or higher education to soldiers, sailors and people from the air force who have served for 6 years. Spend £8 billion over 10 years to make the houses people in the army, navy and air-force live in better. Make sure people in the army, navy and airforce and their families get treatment on the NHS when they are made to move homes. Build two new aircraft carriers.

The Liberal Democrats – Afghanistan and Defence Against the war in Iraq want to change what the British soldiers are doing in Afghanistan. Talk to enemies in Afghanistan and try and end the war. Cut spending on fighter jets and the money spent on the war in Afghanistan. Get rid of ½ of Britain’s nuclear weapons and try and get other countries to get rid of them as well. Raise the basic pay of lower ranks in the army, navy and air-force so they earn the same as policemen. Double the number of forces’ family homes to be improved.

The Green Party – Afghanistan and Defence Bring home British soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq straight away. Ensure in the future that the British army, navy and air-force is only used in to defend Britain, or as a last resort, to help out as part of a group of armies from around the world. To use the army to avoid war and help other countries not to fight. To get all countries in the world to make agreements to get rid of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons. To stop helping companies who sell weapons to other countries. To get rid of Britain’s nuclear weapons.

UKIP – Afghanistan and Defence Spend 40% more on defence to buy better equipment, improve homes of soldiers and their families and improve medical care for the armed forces. Double the size of the Territorial Army. Increase the army by 25,000. Not join in with European defence plans. Only sent British soldiers to war when it is good for Britain.
