What do we need? 1. Communication 2. Respect 3. Health 4. Opportunity 5. RESILIENCE

The ability to RECOVER from ADVERSITY! What do we know? –Bad things happen. –There are always choices to be made. –Feelings change over time. –Recovery requires tools and experience. What do people need? PRACTICE. WHAT IS RESILIENCE?

Who needs it? Adults! When we are… –Hurt –Angry –Scared –Overwhelmed –Stressed! Kids! When they are… –Hurt –Angry –Scared –Overwhelmed –Stressed!

What do we all need?

How does it make us healthier? Resilience makes the difference! What do we know? –Many factors impact health. –Being healthy requires perseverance. –Illness and injury happen. –Recovery requires resilience.

How can we get it? Perspective – Control what you can control Strategies Clear goals Accessible, safe stress relievers Manageable commitments Well-developed support network Resources we’re willing to use

HOW TO GET COMMUNICATION 1.Don’t expect anyone to be psychic. 2.Don’t try to be psychic yourself. 3.Don’t just imagine the conversation – have it. 4.Figure out what you need, then ask for it! 5.Write it down

HOW TO GET RESPECT 1. Expectations –Accessibility –Priorities 2. How are you called? –Title –Name –Nicknames 3. Tone of voice –What do you answer to? –What is an “emergency?” Change others by changing yourself. Write it down

HOW TO GET HEALTHY At home: Sleep Nutrition Careful with substances! Exercise Stress reducers Orgasm At the doctor’s: A doctor you trust A doctor you SEE Health screenings –Every visit –Yearly –Certain ages Vaccines A doctor to tell the truth

HOW TO GET OPPORTUNITIES Figure out what you need. Collect resources. Figure out who you know. Ask for help. Accept help when it’s offered. Collect people who believe in you!
