Horse Tack

Grooming Grooming improves the appearance of the horse. It cleans the hair and skin and reduces the chances for skin disease and parasites. The muscle tone of the horse is also improved.

Types of Saddles

Western Saddles. They are large and heavy. Western saddles give a comfortable ride. They are designed to work with cattle on the western ranges.

English Saddles English saddles are lighter than Western saddles. They have a flat seat. The English saddle is used without a blanket.

Saddle Pads Western English

Types of Bridles Purpose of t he bridle is to hold the bit in horse’s mouth.

Weymouth Bridle Is a double Bridle, 2 bits two sets of reins. Used when showing 3 and 5 gated horses.

Pelham Bridle Used for hunting, Pleasure riding and Polo.

Split-Eared Bridle Used for working stock.

Hackamore Similar to a bridle but has not bit. Used when breaking young horses. Used so mouth of horse will not be injured.

Types of Bits Purpose of the bit is to help control the horse.

Snaffle Bit Most popular bit. Developed in Assyria in 900 b.c.

Curb Bit Used in western show classes. Curb chain

Halters Used for tying or leading horses. When putting a horse on pasture, always remove the halter to prevent it from becoming caught. A lead rope is connected to the halter.

Rugs, Sheets, Blankets Various types of rugs, sheets or blankets may be needed for keeping horse warm in winter or protecting it from flies and dust in hot weather.

Horse Trailers Trailers must provide for the safety and protection of the horse.

Horse Trailers Continued. Trailers need: 1. A padded chest bar. 2. An Uneven floor surface. These devices provide for safety of the horse.
