1. Hire Good People Step 1 – Write or read the job role Step 2 – Write an ad that clearly explains the role & your expectations Step 3 – Organise a group interview if numbers are large. If you are making the final decision, then don’t read the resume first

Hire Good People Step 4 – Check references Step 5 – Use tests (written & practical) Step 6 – Have a probation period Brainstorm Interview Questions

2. Performance Appraisals  For the team to reach it’s full potential they need specific strategies aimed at building on their strengths and eliminating weaknesses.  A Performance Appraisal system is one of the keys to unlocking continuous improvement in your business.

Why use Performance Appraisals?  You can congratulate good performance  Leads to a greater understanding of the team  Find solutions with team members for challenges  Develop an Action Plan to assist team members to reach their potential

Why use Performance Appraisals?  Discuss pay increases in a formal setting and at regular intervals  Combine the team members goals with the businesses goals  Have a formal employment record of discussions between you and the team members for future reference

What should be included?  Always start with the Job Description - Skills, Personal Attributes and the Tasks  Goals that the team member wants to achieve  What does the team member see themselves doing in 3 years time?  What improvements do they need to make?

What should be included?  What does the team member enjoy most about the position?  Section for general comments.  Pay increase section.  Place for both the appraiser and the team member to sign.

3. Team Member Motivation & Excitement  Probably the most important issue yet lacking in a high % of businesses  You must create excitement…  Setting objectives and following up regularly is a good starting point  Find out what you people really like doing?

4. Specific Labor Objectives  You must have a very clear picture of what you expect to invest in labor each year, quarter, month, week, even daily!  This must then be measured and tracked with precision. This will then prompt you to ask the right questions on how to improve performance and systems in your business  Share objectives with appropriate team members

5. Training  Have a documented and professional training process for new team members and existing team members as well  Have an induction program for new team members  Set expectations up front  Provide on going well thought through training and assess the impact

6. Productive Meetings  Keep meetings focused and productive.  Concentrate on the team members key role and basic duties first. Keep this constant. People like feedback and direction.  Document agendas and minutes for formal meetings.

7. Positive Feedback But Honest…  Be on the lookout for good performance and complement as such where appropriate. Make this a habit.  90% of feedback should be positive. This will increase loyalty and hence output rapidly. Make sure though it is justified.

8. Team Rewards and Activities  Last but not least!  Reward good performance  Try and focus on team goals  Congratulate individual performance individually if possible
