BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE

BEC (Bose-Einstein Condensate) BEC (Bose-Einstein Condensate) -a state of matter that consists of collection of atoms near absolute zero; all the atoms have that lowest possible quantum energy state.

5 TH STATE OF MATTER In the1920s, Satyendra Nath Bose of India and Albert Einstein together predicted the existence of another state of matter (fifth state of matter). They hypothesised if the collection of atoms were cold enough all the atoms would be in the lowest possible quantum energy state. Thus, they would have the same energy. Since they have identical energy, the atoms could effectively all occupy the same space at the same time (known as condensate). It exists only at temperatures within a few billionths of a degree of absolute zero (0 K or degrees Celsius).

5 TH STATE OF MATTER Scientists were able to create the first condensate in The technology needed to produce condensates was not available until this time. No practical use, but not every scientific discovery yields a practical application. BEC is another example of quantum theory predicting an actual material result.

IN SUMMARY The Bose-Einstein condensate is a gas-like state of matter that exists at extremely cold temperatures. It was predicted around 1925 and confirmed in 1995.
