2 Learning Outcomes By the end of this session the students are expected to be able to –Understand what cohesion is –Use devices to improve the cohesion in a paragraph or an essay –To use adjective clauses correctly in their writing

4 Cohesion When the parts of an essay or a paragraph have clear connections, we say that the paragraph or essay has cohesion Most importantly if the thesis statement has clear connections with the paragraphs

5 Ways to improve Cohesion The connections will be clear if –The supporting points are named in the thesis statement –Put the points in paragraphs with the same order –Repeat the words (or use synonyms) used in the controlling idea of your thesis in the topic sentences –Use transitional signals

6 Development of body paragraphs There are two ways of developing a paragraph to an essay : 1.Giving examples 2.Explanation a.Giving the meaning of words or symbols b.Presenting reasons c.Telling the process d.Describing how something looks or sounds

7 Adjective Clauses An adjective clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun. Adjective clauses begin with relative pronouns: who, whom, where, which, that, whose, and when. Adjective clauses are used to combine short sentences and show relations between them

8 Examples 1 King Sejong ruled Korea during a time of peace and prosperity. 2 He was responsible for the invention of the Korean alphabet. Combined: King Sejong, who ruled Korea during the time of peace and prosperity, was responsible for the invention of the Korean alphabet.

9 Conclusions Cohesion is the clear connections between the thesis statement and the paragraphs in an essay by ways of repetition of words, order of supporting points, and transitional signals. Giving examples and explanations are the two ways to develop a paragraph into an essay Adjective clauses are used to combine two short sentences.
