2 Timothy 1:6-7 (NASB) 6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.

God rules – Genesis 1:1 Created to rule – Genesis 1:26-28 Called to lead – Exodus 3,4, Deut. 31:13 God looks at the heart of man – 1 Sam. 16:6-7 The Greatest is the Least – Matthew 20:20-28 There are Offices of Leadership – Acts 1, 6:1-6, 1 Tim. 3:1-8 There is Gifting for Leadership – Romans 12:8 Leadership Myth – Mark 10:42 – It’s not about you! Biblical Foundations of Leadership

The actions of Jesus on this night puzzled the disciples. He set an “example,” something we are to copy. Jesus had full knowledge that God had “given all things into His hands.” Here, Jesus is the Servant of servants.

As Teacher and Lord, Jesus turned the moment into an opportunity to set the example. This is a pattern they ought to follow… Act of footwashing? OR Attitude? Inner attitude is HUGE in the servant leader and church revitalizer. Actions speak!

1)Jesus humbled Himself and allowed God to exalt Him. John 17 2)Jesus followed His Father’s will rather than seeking a position. Philippians 2 3)Jesus defined greatness as being a servant and a slave. Mark 10:42-45

4)Jesus risked serving others because He trusted in God’s plan. John 13 5)Jesus left His place at the head table to serve the needs of others. John 13 6)Jesus shared responsibility and authority with those He called to lead. Matthew 16:18 7)Jesus built a team to carry out a worldwide vision. The Disciples/Apostles Matthew 4:19

Luke 14:7-11 (NASB) 7 And He began speaking a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them, 8 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him, 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give your place to this man,' and then in disgrace you proceed to occupy the last place. 10 "But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are at the table with you. 11 "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Servant Leader – Serves the mission and leads by serving those on mission with him...the Church. For the SL, the mission is everything! It shapes & focuses decisions and actions. Vision is the leaders unique rendering of the msision

Key Differences… Natural – Self-confident – Knows men – Makes own decisions – Ambitious – Originates own methods – Enjoys commanding – Motivated by personal considerations – Independent Spiritual – Confident in God – Knows God – Seeks to find God’s will – Self-effacing – Finds & follows God’s methods – Delights to obey God – Motivated by love for God & man – God-dependent
