 Fluids

What is a Fluid?  A fluid is anything that has no fixed shape and can flow. Usually it is a liquid or a gas.

What is a Fluid?  Each group will be assigned a type of fluid. Your job is to come up with as many examples as you can in two minutes.  You will be asked to share your examples with the class.  Here are the categories:  Household Materials  Mechanical Devices  Living Things  Natural Environments

What is a Fluid?  Household Materials

What is a Fluid?  Mechanical Devices

What is a Fluid?  Living Things

What is a Fluid?  Natural Environment

Uses of Fluids  1) Transportation of different materials  Fluids make it easier to move materials even if they are solids

Uses of Fluids  1) Transportation of different materials  Fluids make it easier to move materials even if they are solids  Slurries: A mixture of water and a solid (like dirt and water) eg) Mining in the Oil Sands

Uses of Fluids  Syncrude originally used conveyer belts to move the oils sand from the mine to the processing plant, but found it was way to expensive. It is now pumped to the plant by way of a slurry pipeline.

Uses of Fluids  2) Fluids take the shape of their containers. Many solid materials are originally prepared as fluids.

Uses of Fluids  2) Fluids take the shape of their containers. Many solid materials are originally prepared as fluids.  Glass, steel and concrete are examples of where the solids are processed as liquids to shape them easier, so that when they cool or dry as a solid they are in the solid form that they should be. Click on the following links to watch videos. Steel: From Start to FinishHow its made Glass For your information….(you don’t have to write this down… )

Uses of Fluids  3) Fluids can hold other materials (ie. in solutions)

Uses of Fluids  3) Fluids can hold other materials (ie. in solutions)  Toothpaste has a ‘binder’ (which is made from wood pulp) that keeps all the ingredients together. For your information….(you don’t have to write this down… )

Properties of Fluids  Viscosity  Density  Buoyancy  Compressibility

Properties of Fluids  Example:  Pancake syrup has high viscosity because it is thick  Water has low viscosity (runny)  Viscosity is resistance to flow.  It is determined by a fluids internal resistance or friction that keeps it from flowing.  The greater the friction the higher the viscosity, the slower it will move.  The lower the friction the lower the viscosity the faster it will go.

Properties of Fluids  Compare the viscosity of fluids and describe how temperature can affect changes on liquid fluids…  om/watch?v=LPqdEz HyNWM om/watch?v=LPqdEz HyNWM You do not have to write this down, just watch the video.

Properties of Fluids  As temperature increases, speed increases, viscosity decreases

Properties of Fluids  As temperature increases, speed increases, viscosity decreases  As temperature decreases, speed decreases, viscosity increases

Properties of Fluids  Ashley was helping her father change the oil in their van. After they had drained the old oil and replaced the filter, Mr. Jameson asked Ashley to bring him four liters of oil from the shelf. She went to the shelf but saw some cans labeled 5W-30 and some 10W-30. She hollered back to her dad and asked what she should bring? You do not have to write down the question, only your answer.

Properties of Fluids  Her dad responded 5W-30 since its still winter. Knowing what you know about fluids, why would you want to have a different oil for winter and a different one for summer? You do not have to write down the question, only your answer.

Properties of Fluids  To move different liquids through tubes and pipes, the viscosity of the liquid has to be considered.  The viscosity of the liquid determines the size of tubes that should be used.

Properties of Fluids 1) Why are slush straw and soft-drink straws different? You do not have to write down the question, only your answer.

Properties of Fluids 2) Two pipelines were being put into the ground where you live. One is a larger pipe than the other. One is oil and one is water, they each carry the same amount of the liquid. Which one is which? You do not have to write down the question, only your answer.

Properties of Fluids Alberta Oil Sands: only 25% can be extracted by conventional methods, but 75% can be extracted by lowering the viscosity of the oil in the ground, before trying to extract it. Fluids move across the country in pipelines. Heaters are used to control the viscosity along the pipelines For your information….(you don’t have to write this down… )

Properties of Fluids Cleaning products can have their viscosity adjusted by changing the temperature…to remove bubble gum from shoe or carpet lower the temperature. Use an ice cube to make the bubble gum more viscous, making it easier to remove. For your information….(you don’t have to write this down… )
