The atom

Atom Make up Atoms are made of three kinds of particles. Protons (p) = have a positive charge (+1) Neutrons (n) = have no charge (0) Protons and neutrons make up the core of the atom called the nucleus. Electrons (e) = have a negative charge

The atom p +1 N0N0 e -1 Nucleus Electron Cloud

Atomic Number Every atom of a particular element contains the same number of protons. The number of protons is equal to the atomic number. Atoms have the same number of protons and electrons. The number of neutrons may vary – carbon can have 5, 6, 7 or 8 neutrons. All atoms are neutral.

Atomic Particles ParticleChargeMass (amu)Mass (g) Electron (e) x NucleonProton x NucleonNeutron x Atomic Particles are extremely small. - Protons and Neutrons are roughly the same size. - They are 2,000 times larger than electrons

Review What are the three particles that make up an atom? Proton, Neutron, Electron What is the charge for a proton, neutron and electron? Proton (+1), Neutron (0), electron (-1) Why are you unable to see atoms? They are extremely small

Review Name the two atomic particles that make up the nucleus? Proton and Neutron Where do electrons hang out? Electron Cloud Do electrons all travel in the same or separate path? Why? No, they are moving rapidly and bouncing into each other.
