Kendal’s Values and Practices Environmental Stewardship Kendal embraces its deeply felt responsibility to be concerned about the appropriate use and conservation of the Earth’s resources. In building our physical communities and the daily operation of them The deep roots that sustain Kendal are found in kendal values and practices environmental stewardship is one of them

Sustainability: A survey of Progress 2000 Request to integrate sustainability into Kendal’s operations Getting Started In mid-2000s a growing interest among residents, board, and staff to incorporate environmental sustainability in the Kendal System of communities. Be Patterns, Be Examples Kendal, as a leading not for profit provider of senior housing and services, has an opportunity and societal obligation to demonstrate leadership in supporting and promoting environmental stewardship. Kendal communities will strive to conduct their activities in an ecologically sound, socially responsible, and economically prudent manner. Kendal communities will support the concepts of sustainability in their operations and resident life initiatives. In serving older people, Kendal will take special care to minimize community member’s exposure to harmful substances. We will strive to function as a sustainable community, emphasizing energy conservation and responsible consumption, promoting ecological understanding and environmentally sound practices among its residents and staff, and supporting these values throughout the wider community.   July 25, 2008 Approved by Kendal Corporate Board of Trustees July 25,2008 Kendal corporate board of trustees approved our commitment statement about sustainability We felt that it is important to develop a board – approved statement about sustainability. Want the board of directors commitment that this is a core organizational priority not just an initiative that might come and go depending on the personality and interest of certain staff, board members or residents.

System-wide Sustainability Project Group Includes Facilities Directors, residents, and board members Quarterly conference call Endeavor to have a lead presentation or topic Give each affiliate the opportunity to share their efforts and successes Summarize and distribute presentations and minutes Periodic distribution of articles or information System –wide sustainability project group The project group included – read each bullet We join as members of U S green Building Council and had members of the project group get there LEED AP certification

Sustainability Metrics Survey In 2013 we developed a sustainability metrics survey to benchmark all of our communities progress in reaching our 13 sustainability initiatives

Opportunities for Measurement Hanover - purchased 20 electric meters to measure baseline and reduced electricity 8.5%, 2014 Hanover made the commitment to be a 100% green electric power consumer Oberlin- purchased two Fluke portable data loggers to measure energy reduction opportunities throughout it’s building, and develop optimized energy performance plans Crosslands energy committee – documented a $50,000 decrease in energy costs (7%) with LED lighting and programmable thermostats Ithaca - composting 3.5 tons of food waste per month reduced waste stream by 35% Lathrop - reduced waste stream by 80% with recycling and composting I would kike to share with you some of the opportunities that came out of our sustainability initiatives Next side

Opportunities for Measurement Chandler Hall - partnered with Ecosave services Reducing $ 80k/yr in guaranteed energy savings with energy conservation measures Kendal Corporation - invested in infrared testing equipment to help all affiliates conduct building envelope evaluations Measuring thermal heat loss, moisture intrusion, insulation deficiencies and air leakage energy losses Admiral - re-commission of existing building to improve their building’s overall performance by optimizing energy efficient design features and directly addressing equipment performance and system integration issues

IT IS TIME FOR A NEW GOAL Utility Master Plan Solar Purchase renewable energy CoGen (Combined Heat and Power) BAS (Building Automation Systems) Building Standards and dashboards Zip Cars Find ways to reduce fossil fuel dependency and measure CO2 reductions Continued Resident/Board/Staff Commitment and Involvement At our annual Facilities gathering in 2015 we agreed it was time for a new goal and the goal we agreed on was to reduce fossil fuel dependency and measure co2 reductions reduce fossil fuel dependency and

Sustainability Metrics Survey Ted kirpartack , David Jones and myself developed this kendal carbon footprint tacking tool 1st box top left - you imput your utilities consumption per month 2nd box bottom left - you enter you cost per month 3rd box top right - will automatic load your carbon footprint per the month 4th box bottom righ -will totalize your consumption and your total carbon foot print for each utilities

Setting Goals: Carbon Footprint Setting goals with out carbon foot print calculator The top boxes show your total carbon footprint and cost based on your total utilities consumption Next in the red reduce my footprint box you set your goal of how much you want to reduce your total carbon footprint Then in the next boxes you set how much you can reduce your usage for each utilities That will then automatically load how much of your percent you archived of your over all goal explain how its works

Opportunities at CCRCs Committed residents who are socially conscious and concerned Benefits of working as community Connections with leaders in the field Significant infrastructure (just under 6 M SF) - varied energy sources provide on-going opportunities for efficiency gains Opportunities at Kendal which allow for the continued development of environmental stewardship program at our communities include Next side

Challenges Pressure to keep capital project budgets in check Staff stretched for time and resources; turnover “We dole out energy as if it were free” “Someone else’s problem” Sustainability vs. aesthetics All in all, I am very excited about the cost savings realized at Kendal communities from our sustainable initiatives. But more than that, I am excited about how the conversation about sustainability among residents and staff has evolved into thoughtful and far reaching considerations of how they and their community can be better informed, and truly have an impact on awareness and care for the environment.
