 AVID: What are your goals for this year?

 What is one thing you did this summer that you will put on your college application?

 Through discussion and research, students will develop their own individual college and scholarship goals and begin working toward those goals.  Agenda:  Turn in AVID agreement and syllabus  Discussion on processes and timeline for colleges, and scholarship applications.

 Last year: Average student in AVID earned $30,000 in scholarships.  Ranged from $0-$240,000.  Three Daniels Fund Scholarship Winners at South

 Demonstrate Financial Need – This will be shown on your parents income tax form from 2012 that needs to be submitted with your portfolio.  ACT composite score of 17 or higher OR an SAT combined score of 830 and higher by application deadline  Graduate in MAY 2014  Be a US Citizen, Permanent Resident or Refugee with asylum status AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION  Strong characteristics (when was a time you contributed positively to your school or community)  Academic Curiosity (where you did additional work in a subject area you are interested, went the extra mile in class)  Self-motivated (when was a time you took initiative)  Community Involvement (One detailed example)  Zest for life  Tell them about yourself (Tell YOUR story. You are unique!)  The Daniels Scholarship is a four-year scholarship that applies toward the expenses of attaining a bachelor’s degree at any nonprofit, accredited college or university in the United States.   Due Oct. 31

 Resume  Two Letter of Recommendation Requests: One from a South High School official (teacher, counselor, staff) or a community member.  A copy of your parent’s 2012 tax return (for example – a 1040; 1040A; or 1040EZ)  500 word essay: Why you feel you should be a Daniels Fund Scholar?

 Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they meet all of the following criteria:  - Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American** or Hispanic American  - Are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States  - Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED  - Will enroll for the first time at a U.S. located, accredited*** college or university (with the exception of students concurrently pursuing a high school diploma) in the fall of 2014 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student. First-time college enrollees can also be GED recipients.  - Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities  - Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria 

 Current high school (or home-schooled) seniors attending school in the United States (or select DoD schools);  U.S. Citizens; U.S. Nationals; U.S. Permanent Residents; Refugees; Asylees; Cuban-Haitian Entrants; or Humanitarian Parolees;  Anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application;  Planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution;  Carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.  Coca-Cola Scholars are well-rounded, bright students who not only excel academically, but are also actively involved in their school. These leaders are passionate, service-oriented, and demonstrate a sustained commitment to bettering their community.  Not Need Based-Achievement Based  October 31 deadline 
