Unit 3 Finding distance and direction

How to measure distance on a map? Use a ruler and the scale of the map What is the distance between Hong Kong and Beijing?

How to measure direction?

How to measure and show direction? There are three ways to show direction 1.Compass point 2.Whole circle bearing 3.Reduced bearing

N S E W 1.Compass point NE SE NW SW

2.Whole circle bearing Show the direction in bearings by using a protractor. It starts from north in a clockwise direction. The direction of one place from another is described by the number of degrees measuring from north.

45º The whole circle bearing of Fuzhou from Hong Kong

3. Reduced bearing It shows the direction in degrees. It starts either from north or south to east or west. Besides giving the number of degrees, it is necessary to indicate from which direction (N or S) to which direction (E or W).

N S E W N36ºE N63ºW S42ºE S23ºW 3. Reduced bearing

S45ºW The reduced bearing of Hong Kong from Fuzhou

Name the following ways of telling direction 1.Shanghai is at the northeast of Hong Kong. 2.Shanghai is 29 º from Hong Kong. 3.Shanghai is N 29 ºE from Hong Kong. 1.Compass point 2.Whole circle bearing 3.Reduced bearing
