Study Strategies for Parents How to help your child study effectively & efficiently.

ORGANIZATION Assignment Notebook or sheet Require & check each night Have teachers initial if necessary Folders & Notes Organize each night Take out what isn’t needed Make sure important assignment are easily found Have a system for organizing (folders, 3 ring binders, trapper)

Getting ready to study Distraction free area No television, cell phones, etc. White noise is helpful Comfortable & Familiar Place Everyone is different – desk, table, bed, floor, etc. Some prefer alone, others with people around Make a to do list before you start Know what needs to be done and prioritize Be positive Even if you don’t think the assignment is valuable, do not relay that to your child. Your attitude will rub off on them. Study Everyday Even if you don’t have homework study every subject everyday. Break it down into smaller time segments Pick a time that is right for you (don’t sabotage yourself) Make a schedule for the day

Study Strategies (it’s not just about homework) Go over homework with your child Quiz your child (sticky notes) Re-write notes Make “cheat sheets” that can be used throughout the day Make flashcards Re-read chapters & take notes on main topics

TIPS Set short term expectations & goals together. Set clear consequences & rewards. Know what type of learner your child is. Don’t let them procrastinate. General rule of study time is app. 10 minutes per grade level. Remember that every teacher has different expectations.

More Tips…. Hey I’m Hungry.. Eat a variety of foods everyday, including vegetables, fruits, grains & low fat protein sources. Limit sugars, salts & vegetable oils. Sugary snacks & drinks do not help your mind work at it optimal level. Drinks plenty of WATER. High carb foods, such as pasta, can help improve your mood & put you in the best state of mind for learning, but don’t eat too much or you’ll get sleepy.

Things to remember It is ultimately the students responsibility. The student must develop the right attitude & motivation. The student must accept responsibility for successes & failures.

COMMUNICATION Check assignments and grades on line. Communicate with teachers. * Email is a great tool
