From Standard Form to Scientific Notation Step 1: Identify how many places (n) do you have to move the decimal point to leave only one digit to the left side of the decimal point. Step 2: Move the decimal point. If the decimal point is moved to the right, write n as a negative number. If the decimal point is moved to the left, write n as a positive number. Step 3: Multiply times 10 to the n power.
