Unit 1

Bell Work In as much detail as possible, explain what this means and/or represents: x = 5

Equations What is an equation? What do they consist of?

7 Fundamental Units

World’s Roundest Object Question to keep in mind: What do they mean by a physical object, and how are some units defined by concepts?

Using your physics textbook, or your cell phone, locate the following figures, and write them out in their long forms. Ex. 20,000,000, The mass of the sun. 2.The mass of a proton Now consider the following problem: In the event, the sun was made ENTIRELY of protons, how many protons would it take? How viable would this problem be to calculate using the numbers previously found?

Scientific Notation A way of writing figures easily and consistently, independent of extremely large, or extremely small magnitudes. Ex. 2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000  2 x  8.9 x

What to do… 1.Move the decimal place to the left or right to create a new number from 1 up to Determine the exponent, which is the number of times you moved the decimal. 3.Put the number in the correct form for scientific notation Now to practice….

SI Unit Prefixes

Getting some perspective… Choose one of the prefixes common to the field: giga, mega, kilo, centi, milli, micro, & nano. Identify something that is commonly measured using in those magnitudes.

Conversions Common:meters to kilometers, milligrams to nanograms, etc… Less common: miles to kilometers, hours to seconds, etc…. Time for some practice….
