GENETIC ENGINEERING PROJECT: CLONING Summer Dion & Wylisa Doggins 10/18/2011 Blk: 3 rd

What Is The Technique?  Cloning is the creation of an organism that is an exact genetic copy of another, meaning every bit of DNA between the 2 organisms are the same.

How is this technique used in the U.S and around the world? Around the world, cloning is used for:  DNA Cloning- the process of creating multiple copies of an isolated DNA fragment or fragments in vitro or in vivo methods.  Reproductive Cloning- The production of a genetic duplicate of an existing organism. A human clone would be a genetic copy of an existing person  Therapeutic Cloning- Cells are taken from a patient and inserted into a fertilized egg whose nucleus has been removed. The cell that is created is going to divide repeatedly to form a blastocyst. Scientists then take stem cells from it, and use those cells to grow tissue that are a perfect genetic match for the patient. (We chose to elaborate on Reproductive Cloning.)

Advantages & Disadvantages of Cloning  Solution to infertility  Provides organs for transplants  Genetic modification  Healthiness of infants  Better understanding of genetic diseases  Helps improve lives  Uncertainty of science and technology  Losing diversity in genes  The diseases/leading to distinction  Religious problems  Transgressing nature  Inhumane AdvantagesDisadvantages

Pros and Cons of Cloning  The vital organs of the human body can be cloned, they can serve as backup systems for human beings.  Produce people with certain qualities/human beings with particular desirable traits.  Enable the genetic alteration of plants and animals.  Obtain customized organisms and harness them for health benefits of society.  Endangered species will have a chance to overcome endangerment.  Putting animal and human rights at risk.  Cost efficiency; Cloning isn’t free.  Technical and economic barriers will have to be considered when doing organ transplant with cloned organisms.  Deliberate reproduction of unwanted traits. Pros Cons 

Ethical Issues of Cloning  Having the right to have children, no matter how they are created.  Wondering if cloned kids may suffer from any social repercussions. If so, what?  Some religions think cloning is a way of “playing God”.  Is it right to harvest organs from a clone?  Is it justifiable to kill a human embryo for stem cells?

What people in the U.S think about cloning  Religious Some and most religions say that its not right to use cloning because it is wrong to mess with the way that we were born and how other people who use cloning to make children using a specific DNA instead of being made form from your parent’s DNA.  Quotes From People Sandra Rubin, 15, from Edward R. Murrow High School, said she prefers the term "playing nature." "I don't believe in God, but I do feel that cloning goes against what is produced completely naturally," Sandra said. "I can see the advantages of cloning organs for medical purposes," said Jessica Santiago, 14, a Lab School freshman. "But I just can't imagine cloning humans. It's disturbing."

Opinionated Question What do we think about cloning?
