What is Moodle? Moodle (abbreviation for Modular Object- Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is a free and open-source e-learning software platform, also known as a Course Management System,, or Virtual Learning Environment. Moodle was originally developed by Martin Dougniamas to help educators create online courses with a focus on interaction and collaborative construction of content, and is in continual evolution.

Advantages and disadvantages of Moodle Advantages: Immediate access to important course information and material. Additional learning tools, such as forums and quizzes (self tests). The freedom to access course materials at any time and away from campus. Disadvantages: Lack of easy to obtain support --Forum has a great deal of information but it can be difficult to find –nearly all Forum information is in English Requires that someone on your staff takes responsibilityfor making it work; you can’t just telephone Moodletechnical support

Advantages and Disadvantages of Moodle Total cost of ownership is reduced Savings can be used for content development Moodle community is an extremely effective resource Customise to fit your needs More instructor effort required; teaching staff may not be able to cope with new technology Great idea but just too much trouble –no time, no money and little or no support

Conclusion Moodle will work but not by itself. If teaching staff are not given the responsibility/incentive for producing content, and if there is not a “course author or designer” that can work with both teachers in creating on-line materials, then Moodle, will remain an empty shell --a good car but with no driver.
