Political Developments in the Early Republic Chapter 11.4 & 11.5 Federalists VS Alexander Hamilton Republicans Thomas Jefferson

Debate on Issues: How did the Federalists and Republican visions for the U.S. differ? For debate use Reading NOTES 11.4, 11.5

Debate on four issues from the perspective of your assigned character. Kissinger will now count you off 1,2,3 1’s = Judges (impartial) They will decide who won each debate. 2’s = Jefferson 3’s = Hamilton When Kissinger shows you the prompt, you will begin a 2 min. debate on a specific issue from each perspective. Winner of Rock, Paper, Scissors will start debate. After the debate judges make decision on the winner.

Review of Views on the Issues Hamilton/Federalists Favored a strong national government. Supported a loose construction of the Constitution. A broad interpretation, Congress has powers beyond those specifically given in the Constitution. Favored using the government’s power to support business, manufacturing and trade. A strong national bank that would collect taxes and keep funds safe. It would print money backed by the government, it would make loans to businesspeople. Alarmed by violence of the French Revolution, favored Great Britain in its war with France. Jefferson/Republicans Strong states’ rights and an economy based on agriculture. “Those who labor the earth are the chosen people.” Supported a strict construction of the Constitution. Congress has only those powers specifically given in the Constitution. Democracy over any other form of government. Best government=the government that governs the least, limited powers. National bank unconstitutional, designed to encourage growth of businesses and manufacturing. Bank will not make loans to farmers to buy land. They saw the French Revolution as a step toward democracy and attacked the Federalists support for Great Britain.

1 st Federalists yell! “Born to rule, we know what we need! With a strong central government, we will succeed!” 2 nd Republicans yell! “We know what we need from day to day! Don’t try to rule us from far away!” This will be a talk-it-out debate 3 rd Judges yell! Rock, Paper, Scissors Then GO!

Issue #1 Views of Human Nature Hamilton VS Jefferson. People are selfish! We can’t give too much power to the common people because... The National Government should have strong powers and to be run by the wise and educated people… Federalists wanted to unite the quarreling states and keep order among the people… The best form of Government is one that governs the least because… The National government needs to not get involved and a strict construction of the Constitution… After 2nd debate everyone moves to the right.

Issue #3 Views on Economy Views on National Bank Hamilton VS Jefferson. The ideal economy is based on industry because… Our country should set up a National Banking system because… The real way to expand our economy is not with the bankers and merchants because… The economy should be based on agriculture because… After 3 rd debate everyone again moves to right

Issue #4 Last debate Views on Great Britain Views on France Hamilton VS Jefferson. We should side with England, businesses depend on trade with Great Britain because… U.S. should hope to be a powerful and respected nation would could defend itself because… U.S. should support France because… Jefferson however disrespected Representative Frenchman Genet because….
