Jackie Driver, Head of Good Relations, Equality and Human Rights Commission Disability related harassment – What are we learning?

Introduction Who we are? What are we doing? Who should be helping? What we want to happen? Ways forward…

Who are we? We are the Equality and Human Rights Commission We work to make sure everyone gets treated in a good and fair way.

The work we are doing We want harassment of disabled people to stop. We are finding out what is being done to stop harassment happening to disabled people.

What is harassment? Harassment can be things like calling you names saying nasty things to you making fun of you sending you nasty s or text messages doing something sexual to you that you do not want hitting or pushing you

This could happen while you are out and about or at home Bullying and hate crime are also types of harassment

Who should be helping? People in charge, like The police Housing officers Social workers Bus drivers and train drivers Teachers

What are we doing about it? We have asked disabled people what has happened when they tell people in charge about being harassed Now we are finding out if the people in charge are really helping disabled people

What we want to happen? Harassment to stop People in charge to make it easier for disabled people to tell them about harassment The courts to take disabled people seriously Better support for disabled people More positive attitudes to disabled people Greater freedom for disabled people
