“One of the main themes then, and now, in South African art was the investigation of the myriad questions the representations of identity. When a government imposes classification against ones will, based on arbitrary racist categories, identity becomes a volatile subject.”- William Kentridge In April of 1994 South Africa emerged as a country with a new identity. A lot of Kentrides work is a study of the lives of many South Africans in the pre-democracy era.

A hand-drawn still from a Kentridge animation ( ). Kentridge’s drawings and stop-motion videos often have a subtle but reflectively political undertone, investigating the cultural dualities of South Africa and the artist’s birth city of Johannesburg. Fine Arts Magazine
