The Board’s Guiding Thoughts One Seed can start a garden, one smile can lift a spirit. One Candle can light a room, one conversation can start a friendship. One Step can begin a journey, one heart can love many. One person can make a difference that one is you!

The Madrid Story One seed can start a garden  December 2003:Jeff Wilcox discussed the possibility of a special fund with Reuben & Irene (Wilcox) Peterson One candle can light a room  Reuben & Irene discussed the possibility with the Johnny Danos & Johni Hays of the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation  February 3, 2004: A joint meeting was held with the Madrid Action Committee & Madrid Lions Club. Response was favorable.

One step can begin a journey  May 3, 2004: Madrid Community Endowment Fund was established as an affiliate subfund of the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation.  Board of Directors was selected  Purpose: “To enhance the quality of life in Madrid, and its rural community, by providing resources for a broad range of charitable causes.”

One person can make a difference – you!  Following the February 3, 2004 joint meeting, it was decided to try to raise $25,000 in donations by April 30,  The goal of $25,000 was set since this was the maximum amount that could be matched by the Endow Iowa Fund.  A donor could become a charter member by donating $1,000.  Madrid Community Endowment Fund now has 31 individuals, families & businesses as Charter members that want to help building a foundation for Madrid’s future.

Summary That one seed back in December 2003 has started a garden throughout Madrid, rural Madrid, Urbandale, Ankeny, Altoona, and Long Beach, California. We are in process of getting more information out and inviting people to become a member of MDEF.
