Looking at one district’s experience with AASB’s CDL program… Making a difference in the way we teach, think, and learn in Bristol Bay

What do you want your students to know and be able to do when they graduate? Talk with your neighbor and share a few ideas about why these things are important.

Did you come up with any of these things? Ability to read, write, and compute. Possess problem solving and reasoning abilities. Demonstrate 21st century skills. Be good citizens. What else did you discuss and come up with? Ability to read, write, and compute. Possess problem solving and reasoning abilities. Demonstrate 21st century skills. Be good citizens. What else did you discuss and come up with?

We want students prepared for the future, but… Do we really know what the future holds? Can we truly identify what skills they will need and what they will be doing? Is there truly a single set of skills they must have or is it better that they are versatile, flexible, and good problem solvers? Do we really know what the future holds? Can we truly identify what skills they will need and what they will be doing? Is there truly a single set of skills they must have or is it better that they are versatile, flexible, and good problem solvers?

What role will technology play in the lives of our students? Think of how it has grown as a part of our own lives. Did you ever resist changing to a computer based application in your work or personal life… our students have never known a time when computers weren’t an integral part of their lives. Think of how it has grown as a part of our own lives. Did you ever resist changing to a computer based application in your work or personal life… our students have never known a time when computers weren’t an integral part of their lives.

In Bristol Bay we knew that our students were ready… some of our staff and parents would be playing catch up for a while. It is an exciting and interesting time for everyone involved.

What were the greatest fears and the greatest hopes when we started? Protecting students and assuring parents Avoiding issues with copyrights Managing hardware replacement and software costs Protecting students and assuring parents Avoiding issues with copyrights Managing hardware replacement and software costs Students learn and grow in ways we never imagined Staff uses tools in imaginative and innovative ways Program is sustainable and grows

How did AASB help us with our program? Presenters like David Warlick to help us stretch our understandings Professional development staff like John Rusyniak to help our staff and students learn new applications Help with handbooks, insurance ideas, and other logistical issues to support staff and administration. We need to continue to support students as they develop technology skills. Research skills Communication skills Data management skills Social networking skills Research skills Communication skills Data management skills Social networking skills

We also have an obligation to inform and protect students from the potential dangers … Knowing how to find credible sources & avoid plagiarism Be aware of identity theft, virus infiltration, and phishing schemes Cyber bullying Exploitation and predatory behaviors Knowing how to find credible sources & avoid plagiarism Be aware of identity theft, virus infiltration, and phishing schemes Cyber bullying Exploitation and predatory behaviors

What difference has the program made in BBBSD? We see developments in creativity in staff and students. We have added two rolling laptop labs for other grades. We have a more dynamic website, school learning environment, and ability to stay connected while traveling. We see developments in creativity in staff and students.
