Purpose: The Calendar process consists of two tasks: to gather community input regarding the academic calendar to recommend an academic calendar or calendars to the board based on instructional fidelity and feedback from the community Our Goals for Tonight Gather input from DIPC to review draft calendar

Calendar Parameters School cannot start before the 4th Monday of August, per State of Texas law. (August 22, 2016) Community input over the past few years has been overwhelmingly in favor of an entire week off for Thanksgiving and two weeks off for Winter Break. Fall semester should end before the Winter Break: Dual credit courses Students graduating at semester and attending college New students moving to Allen over winter break Eliminates projects/homework over the holidays Fall semester is shorter, but more balanced with district and state testing in the Spring
Additional Parameters 177 days of instruction 2 bad weather days – become student holidays if not used: Historically one on Friday before Easter The second one is the day after the last instructional day Secondary early release for final exams
Parameters Continued 10 total professional development days 5 days prior to the start of school (Campus & District days) 3 collaborative planning days (state waiver days): These days are in lieu of instruction and help teachers plan for instructional units Typically scheduled on federal holidays to help alleviate child care concerns Spaced out in the calendar to maximize planning time for teachers Saves money on substitutes that previously were used for teachers to plan 2 campus days: One at the start of the second semester One at the end of the school year
Input Spring Break week Last day of school June 1 March 6-10 to be consistent with Collin College and surrounding districts State testing expected to begin the week of March 28 Last day of school June 1 Other considerations??
