Classroom Instructional Technology Enhancements Proposal to UTFAB James Lyall Assistant to the Dean – Information and Instructional Technology College of Applied Human Sciences March 6, 2006

Classrooms at CSU There are two types of “classrooms” at the University: –154 “General Assignment” Classrooms, which are scheduled and maintained by the University –76 Departmental/College Classrooms, which are scheduled and maintained by various Academic Units

Classrooms at CSU These classrooms are not necessarily differentiable by size or location Throughout their academic programs, students utilize both types of classrooms

The Need Many of these Departmental/College classrooms do not have any instructional technology enhancements There is a lack of resources available within many academic units to fund the cost of a “smart” classroom This creates a significant discrepancy between some GA and Departmental/College Classrooms

The Proposal The Colleges, in collaboration with their respective Academic Units, have identified classrooms with the most demand for Instructional Technology –These rooms are distributed across the campus, and across the Colleges –These rooms are NOT computer labs, conference rooms, or faculty research laboratories

The Proposal We request $72,000 from the UTFAB to enhance up to 12 classrooms –This funding will only be available to an Academic Unit if it is “matched” with an equal amount (Maximum of $6,000/room) –Funding from UTFAB will only be used for Instructional Technology enhancements, not furniture or general remodeling costs

The Proposal –If funded, UTFAB will be updated each semester regarding the status of the classrooms until the project is complete –The funds will be distributed for the first 12 rooms as Academic Units are able to provide matching funds, but no more than three rooms from any single College will be funded –Once complete, the ongoing maintenance for the classroom is the responsibility of the respective Academic Unit

The Proposal –By coordinating the instructional technology enhancements for ALL Classrooms at CSU, it provides consistency for instructors and students. This reduces the need for training and the total cost of support –The $72,000 from UTF would insure over $140,000 is invested in classrooms at CSU, with the financial burden shared between students and the Institution
