A Changing Picture  Cloud computing and storage  Mobile devices – iPads, phones  Social media turned Educational  KEGSNet vle.kegs.org.uk  RAX secure.kegs.org.uk /rax

Who’s teaching who? Students are extremely IT savvy and learn very quickly However, they do not inherently possess the maturity to make wise decisions.. We (staff & parents) need to impart good practice and help them stay safe.

www. childnet.com Helping to keep your children safe online

Statistics (Childnet) Parents … , Research on Web 59% say they don’t allow their child to fill out online forms 5% of parents think their child has given out personal information 16% think that their child has seen adult content on the internet Students … Social Media, Chat, Music, Games 20% say they are not allowed to fill out online forms 49% of kids say that they have given out personal information 57% of 9-19 yr olds claim to have come into contact with adult content online

The Main Risks Commercial – the blur between content and advertising Content – Trustworthy? Appropriate? Extreme material? Contact – Social Media… but also many new forms e.g. P2P (filesharing) e.g. Multi-user gaming

What can we do… at School We will educate them about the risks (Yr7 ICT Lessons) They are always highly supervised All activity is logged Most social media and P2P is disabled Mobile access to Wi-Fi? – but internet access will still be filtered.

What can we do… at Home Get involved with your children online Encourage balanced use – set time limits Make sure they know who they can talk to Discuss good practice Agree rules as a family Keep the computer in a family room; use a family address for shopping etc. Set up internet filtering – especially on mobile devices – but don’t rely on it! Cyber-bullying Educate our children – passwords safe, non-retaliation, block contacts The child must feel able to confide in us (e.g. Allow the child to continue with his phone or the computer) Report to the school, the internet provider or the Police Save any messages or conversations as evidence

The next generation? The growing world of information technology…

Or the Current Generation?
