Hibernation
Hibernation This is a state of sleep that some animals enter into during the winter. They are protected from the cold. They need less food to survive.
Hibernation: The Groundhog Inactive during the winter Stays warm Needs less food
Estivation
Estivation Animals that estivate are protected from dryness during hot, dry periods.
Estivation: The Snail Breathing slows down Heartbeat slows down Because everything slows down they don’t need as much water during hot days. The snail secretes a mucus to seal it’s shell. Mucus- a slimy like juice that protects Once the shell is sealed, they attach to something for extra protection.
Dormancy
This is a period of inactivity. The animal does nothing! Dormancy This is a period of inactivity. The animal does nothing!

Camoflage
Animals use this to blend into a natural background for protection. Camouflage Animals use this to blend into a natural background for protection.
A lizard’s skin blends in with the plants it walk on. A Chameleon can change colors to blend in with anything it is on! A rabbit’s fur will turn white to blend in with snow. A deer’s fur is brown, it blends in with leaves, trees and the ground. A grasshopper blends in with the grass. Snakes can blend in with the ground they live around. A Polar Bear blends in with the snow and ice in it’s habitat!

There are Many Different Habitats
There are many different and interesting things to learn about animals. Some animals hibernate. Some animals estivate. Some are even dormant for part of the year! Animals protect themselves and survive in their habitats using adaptations and camouflage. Other animals migrate. All animals are part of a food chain. People and weather greatly impact the lives of animals.
