Presentation transcript:

In the year 1587 Englishmen and women were led by John White for an expedition. He had permission to go by Sir Walter Raleigh.

Their trip was gruesome. There were storms, heavy currents, and a lot of sickness going around. But somehow they managed.

At last, the crew arrived at Roanoke in July 22, 1587.

After they shored, they made cabins to live in.

The English looked just about finished until John’s daughter gave birth to a girl named Virginia Dare. She was the first English baby to be born in America.

Because the group was running out of supplies, John had to sail back to England for more supplies. He did this on Virginia’s birth date.

When he was ready to come back, ships were being used for war, so he couldn’t come back for another three years. Finally he came back in 1590.

When he came back, he discovered his whole crew was missing. Also, all the houses were taken down. There were no clues besides one word written on a tree, “Croatoan”.

Some theories suggest that Natives took them in. Others say Natives or the Spanish killed them off. But evidence points to a death by starvation, because bones were found.

I personally think Natives or the Spnaish killed them off. But in this theory, the word “Croatoan” doesn’t make sense. But, the bones do. When scientists found the bones an arrow was under the corpse. This means the body was shot by an arrow but not in the bone. This evidence leads to my suggestion.
