Introduction Debra Bralley, TD Teacher at JV Washam Undergraduate: Elementary Ed. (B.A., Eled.) Masters: Gifted Ed. (M.Ed., AIG) Have been teaching in CMS over 13 years

Purpose for TD Services: To differentiate for Gifted and High Achieving Students Mission of TD Services: To provide gifted students the opportunity to: maximize their potential demonstrate their motivation realize their contributions to self and the global community Purpose & Mission

The Gifted Student: Needs fewer repetitions to retain material Makes connections across subjects Uses divergent thinking to come up with new, sometimes ‘out of the box’ connections and solutions Gifted students learn in different ways, NOT just faster! =

The Gifted/Catalyst Model Shared responsibility: – collaboration between the classroom teacher & TD/catalyst teacher Direct Instruction: TD/Catalyst teacher teaches students directly Indirect Instruction: TD/Catalyst teacher provides lessons, activities, and strategies to teachers to use in the regular classroom Gifted identification is part of Indirect Services provided by the TD Catalyst Teacher.

Catalyst Model-JV Washam Collaboration between: –Classroom Teachers –TD Catalyst Teacher –Administrators Mrs. Bralley’s Service Times: –Direct (time: 60-70%) –Indirect (time: 30-40%) There is a need for both direct and indirect services. Differentiation is needed in the regular classroom because the TD teacher cannot see all students every day.

Direct Services at JV Washam Lessons that are the sole responsibility of the TD Catalyst Teacher taught directly to students –math strategies –concepts/generalizations Six Thinking Hats (multiple perspectives) College of William and Mary for the Gifted Curriculum Jacob’s Ladder (William & Mary curriculum) TABA-Concept Development power, conflict, change, systems, relationships, interactions Students pulled to TD room for a set period of time each week –Based on specific concept acceleration Activities related to classroom instruction –Integration of science/social studies curriculum

Direct Service Times at JV Washam 5 th Grade Reading 2x/week Math 3x/week *Includes Math Olympiad (1x/week) (1x month/STEM) 4 th Grade Reading 2x/week Math 3x/week *Includes Math Olympiad (1x/week) 3 rd Grade Reading 2x/week Math 2x/week

Indirect Services at JV Washam Projects PBL-real-world math/integrated science & s.s. Contracts Think Tac Toe-all subjects included Alternative homework Math Olympiad, graphic organizers- ‘big concepts’ Alternative assignments R.A.F.T, independent research projects Curriculum compacting contracts alternative concepts based on pretest data Team Teaching

Differentiated instruction for gifted students provides… Opportunities to: move at the appropriate pace for their learning needs complete assignments to complement and supplement the standard curriculum. engage in abstract, creative, and affective reasoning apply insightful questioning develop a capacity to see interconnections among disciplines practice self-directed learning and independent problem solving maximize their leadership potential become active participants in the global community

Desired Outcomes Our goals are to: have students study the curriculum in greater depth through challenging lessons and differentiated activities. accelerated grade level curriculum and include above-grade level material when appropriate. allow for an accelerated pace of learning. see growth in our gifted students as they reach their potential !
