Domain B2 Establishing and Maintaining Rapport with Students

Page Setup Introduction Explain what rapport means and why it is important Describe how to create a keep a basic level of rapport appropriate to each different student Conclusion

What is rapport? “relation; connection, esp. harmonious or sympathetic relation: a teacher trying to establish close rapport with students.” Building APPROPRIATE relationships with the students in your class. You may need to have different relationships with different students (i.e. a very needy student vs. one who thrives on being independent)

Why is rapport important? Gives students a personalized feeling They want to know that someone actually cares about their success. Sometimes you are the only adult that child will see in a given day that would truly care about them. Allows you to gain respect from students.

How can you build these relationships? Asking questions about their outside life Going to sporting events to be supportive Genuine concern in another’s culture or religion Listening to students/effective communication Some forms of physical contact (i.e. high fives, hugs for young children, etc…)

Diversity of Learners Since we are all different, we build relationships differently. Some of your teachers feel more comfortable having serious conversations where others want to keep it light Each teacher needs to do what he/she is comfortable with and keep in mind that each student is also different. (You cannot have a perfect rapport with every student in the room)

Artifacts Pictures of you working with students individually Surveys your teacher may have had students fill out at the beginning of the year, etc…
