Guided Reading at PBS. Guided reading is not the same as reading individually to the teacher books that are levelled A-P from the reading scheme. The IOE study (institute of Education)found that children who read for pleasure made more progress in maths, vocabulary and spelling between the ages of 10 and 16 than those who rarely read. Dr Sullivan notes that reading for pleasure had the strongest effect on children's vocabulary development, but the impact on spelling and maths was still significant. "It may seem surprising that reading for pleasure would help to improve children's maths scores," she said. "But it is likely that strong reading ability will enable children to absorb and understand new information and affect their attainment in all subjects."

To apply new learning in order to read critically 6. To evaluate a range of texts THE AIM OF EVERY GUIDED READING SESSION IS TO ENCOURAGE AND EXTEND INDEPENDENT READING SKILLS.

Structure of Guided Reading: Each week your child will: Read a book in ability based small groups. We have sets of 4 or 6 of the same books. Complete an activity based around this book for children to share thoughts. Activities have APP targets explicit so can record evidence and date of achievement.

Progression of reading skills.

Each child has one or two sessions in the library where they are able to choose books. The teachers encourage children to sections where they may be interested in topics or through content but children can choose their own book. Children are slowly being taught how to find different books in the library. Library

Parents can come and choose library books with their child as well as come to take suggestions for your child to read. Support in choosing a book at an appropriate level: Yellow section, orange section, red section. Coming soon: list of suggested books at each reading level. Support in the Library
