Class 2 Guided Reading Plus Organization for Guided Reading Plus: Early Language and Literacy Certificate, Course 1 Class 2 Guided Reading Plus

Housekeeping I’m teaching DP class – room at Howell if you want to change Breaks/Snacks protocol Plan to live with uncertainty – can’t have the whole picture up front! Norms Respect everyone’s learning—questions, table talk Be fully present (technology) Cell phones on vibrate No side conversations On time Tangents – not a hill ALWAYS bring all handouts in a binder to class

Housekeeping Reminder Revisit materials handout Begin teaching your GRP case study group by next class – Thurs 11/29 Revisit materials handout Any last minute questions about materials? Electronic Reflection Journal separate reflections – 1 class, 1 reading keep going on same document will collect in Dec, March & May Homework Check it out before last minute! Early Language and Literacy Certificate = a lot of early work!

Homework Review Article: Active From the Start “Be careful not to establish a pattern where the child waits for the teacher to do the work. This is the point at which the child must learn that he must work at a difficulty, take some initiative, make some links. [This] is the general principle that needs to be established at this time…” (Clay) What does this mean to you? Look for examples in the article – italics portion

Table Introductions Name School Grade Level Table talk: What is reading?

Foundational Understanding “…. reading [is] a message-getting, problem-solving activity which increases in power and flexibility the more it is practiced.” (Marie Clay).

Essential Questions How does Guided Reading Plus enhance Guided Reading? How does Guided Reading Plus fit within the Reading Workshop?

Foundational Ideas: Balanced Literacy DPS Reading Curriculum Includes 4 interrelated components Read aloud Shared reading Guided reading Independent reading

Foundational Ideas: Balanced Literacy The success of balanced literacy depends on including all the components in the literacy block how the teacher creates instructional opportunities throughout the block in order to activate background knowledge integrate sources of information (M, S, V) apply problem-solving strategies

Foundational Ideas GRP is one piece of the Reading Workshop It replaces Guided Reading Includes individual conferences

Foundational Ideas Guided Reading Plus is a two-day format, ideally back to back Case Study Group will meet daily, but other groups could meet 2-4 days a week Case Study: M,T & W, Th & F, M….. Other groups: M,T & W,Th or M,T & Th, F etc. Suggestion: STOP thinking about it as M-F, but as Day 1-5 – like specials

Lesson Planner Handout: GRP Lesson Planner, Look-fors, Guidesheet Linda Dorn (creator of Guided Reading Plus) Basic Parts of lesson

Foundational Ideas Pace is critical to effectiveness of GRP, so we have to learn to fit everything in to the lesson time frame use a timer for each section! when time is up, move on, finished or not

Foundational Ideas Establish routines for your GRP group Entry routine “Sit like a reader” Book bags/folders/baskets Use of whiteboards, markers, erasers Magnetic letters organization

Rituals & Routines Think about the video we just watched. What rituals and routines had been established in that group? Share at your table any rituals, routines or organizational structures that you have found to be effective with small groups
