Growing Up Fit Together for 3 rd grade

Lesson 4 Five N Jive Card The new exercise for Lesson 4 is called the “Walking Lunges”. Stand straight up. Now walk then lunge. Stand straight up. Now with the other leg, walk then lunge. Stand straight up and stretch up high. Then turn around and do it again.

Voluntary Muscles Voluntary muscles are the ones that move when you want them to. You have to think in order to move these muscles. These types of muscles are those in your arms and legs that make you swing your arms and walk.

Involuntary Muscles Involuntary muscles are the ones that move all the time. You do not have to think in order to move these muscles. They move on their own. These types of muscles are those that make your heart beat, your lungs breathe, and your eyes blink.

4 Rules for a Healthy Heart 1. Eat a variety of healthy foods 2. Get moving and be active. 3. Breathe smoke-free air, and don’t smoke. 4. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks.

Your Heart Your heart is the size of your fist. Can everyone make a fist for me? Your heart beats all the time. It pumps blood through tubes called arteries and veins. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. The blood drops that are going away from your heart are picking up energy and oxygen as they leave your heart and lungs.

Your Heart The blood also gets energy from the foods you eat. The veins carry the blood back to the heart. The blood drops run out of food and oxygen by the time they have gotten all the way around your body. So they have to pick up more each time around.

Which Heart Healthy Rule Do We Use? I will name some different scenarios that may try to pressure you into doing something that is not healthy for your body. I want you to tell me which heart healthy rule we would use. Is everybody ready?

Which Heart Healthy Rule Do We Use? 1.A friend has a cigarette and asks you to take a puff. You choose not to take a puff. Which heart healthy rule is this? 2.You are with friends at a baseball game. It is hot and you are thirsty. One friend buys a soda with sugar and the other buys a fruit flavored drink that is really sweet. You think for a while and then you buy a bottled water. What heart healthy rule is this? 3.You are trying to eat healthy foods. You go to the store with some friends. They all buy some candy. You buy an apple. What heart healthy rule is this? 4.You are planning to go for a bike ride to get some exercise. A friend comes over with a new video. You choose to ride your bike. What heart healthy rule is this?

Which Heart Healthy Rule Do We Use? 5.Your mother is making a shopping list for the grocery store. You ask her to buy some yogurt, carrots, and celery. Which heart healthy rule is this? 6.A family member begins smoking right next to you and you don’t like to breathe second hand smoke so you leave the room. Which heart healthy rule is this?
